Overview

About this course

S2 Level 4 is our accelerated BGE course. Pupils meet Fourth Level experiences and outcomes a year early, building a strong algebraic and geometric toolkit. Much of the content overlaps with the early stages of National 5, giving these pupils a head start into the Senior Phase and keeping the Higher pathway firmly open.

  1. Q1

    Expand and simplify (x + 4)(x − 7).

    2 marks
    Show solution

    Solution

    x² − 7x + 4x − 28 = x² − 3x − 28.

  2. Q2

    Factorise fully 6x² − 24.

    2 marks
    Show solution

    Solution

    6(x² − 4) = 6(x − 2)(x + 2).

  3. Q3

    Change the subject of the formula P = 2L + 2B to B.

    2 marks
    Show solution

    Solution

    P − 2L = 2B, so B = (P − 2L) ⁄ 2.

  4. Q4

Find the gradient of the line through (1, 3) and (5, 11).

    2 marks
    Show solution

    Solution

    m = (11 − 3) ⁄ (5 − 1) = 8 ⁄ 4 = 2.

    1 mark
    Show solution

    Solution

    4.7 × 10⁻⁵.

  2. Q2

A house valued at £180 000 appreciates by 3% per year. Find its value after 2 years.

    3 marks
    Show solution

    Solution

    180 000 × 1.03² = £190 962.

  3. Q3

In a right-angled triangle the angle is 35° and the hypotenuse is 12 cm. Find the opposite side.

    2 marks
    Show solution

    Solution

    opp = 12 × sin 35° = 6.88 cm (to 2 d.p.).

  4. Q4

    Simplify √50.

    1 mark
    Show solution

    Solution

    √25 × √2 = 5√2.
