S2 Mathematics — Level 4
The bridge to the Senior Phase. Level 4 introduces the algebra, trigonometry and relational thinking that National 4 and National 5 are built on, at a pace that prepares pupils for certificated study in S3.

What is taught, how it is assessed, and what pupils should be able to do by the end.
S2 Level 4 is a demanding, rewarding course. Pupils work with expressions, equations, surds, trigonometry and simultaneous equations — content that reappears directly in National 5 Mathematics. Because of this, the S2 Level 4 profile is the main evidence used when confirming S3 pathways.
Topics covered
- Algebraic manipulationExpanding brackets, factorising common factors, algebraic fractions and rearranging formulae.
- Linear relationshipsGradient, the equation of a straight line, and solving simultaneous equations graphically.
- TrigonometryRight-angled trigonometry: sine, cosine and tangent ratios, and finding missing sides and angles.
- Surds and indicesSimplifying surds, index laws, and scientific notation.
- QuadraticsFactorising trinomials, solving quadratic equations, and sketching parabolas.
- StatisticsStandard deviation introduced informally; comparing distributions; scatter graphs and lines of best fit.
How this course is assessed
- Weekly homework plus a fortnightly extended exercise.
- Three block assessments, each with a non-calculator paper.
- A Level 4 profile compiled in May to confirm the S3 pathway.
- No external examination at this level.

Past papers
Real papers and official marking instructions, ordered newest first.
Past papers are the most effective revision tool there is — but only when they are marked honestly. Print the paper, work it in one sitting under timed conditions, then mark it against the scheme and write down every question type that cost marks. Bring that list to your teacher.

Practice assessments
Written by our own teachers for the assessment your child is about to sit.
These are not random worksheets. Each practice assessment mirrors the format, length and mark distribution of the forthcoming classroom assessment, so pupils know exactly what to expect — including the questions that are designed to be difficult.
